Miles Morales is the Puerto Rican superhero that absolutely everyone needs! Especially when it comes to masked heroes. As Miles once said, “Anyone can wear the mask. You can wear the mask.“
When it comes to representation in video games it’s quite obvious which race has had the longest run of well loved characters, even in Nintendo’s biggest IPs like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid, while these characters are great with even greater stories behind them the fact remains that representation of Black, Brown, and Latino characters in video games or comics and any other nerdy outlet are seriously lacking.
Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, under the supervision of then-editor-in-chief Alex Alonso, the concept of a non-white Spider-Man introduced in 2011 created significant waves in the intersection of video games, comics, and movie adaptations. However, it was the release of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” in 2018 that truly showcased Miles Morales’s endearing traits and cultural background, making him a beloved character among fans, both new and old, and allowing them to appreciate Spider-Man in a whole new way.
For the Latino community, a small but significant part of their culture has been showcased and distributed in IMAX and other major theaters around the world. This representation is important because it moves away from the typical portrayals of Latinos as gangsters, mere side characters, or as supporting roles in indie films. Instead, it highlights a main character whose Puerto Rican background is essential to his identity—not just as Miles Morales, but as Spider-Man.
